"I'll go back to what worked before ..."

... how many times?

This is one of the biggest myths people tell themselves about dieting.

The Big Picture 🏞️

“I’ll just go back to what worked before.”

“I lost 20 pounds doing this, so I know I can do it again.”

“This time, I’ll do it and keep it off.”

I wish those were true, but the evidence says otherwise.

Most people who choose a quick-fix diet don’t stick to it long-term.

Most people fail to see there's another choice:

Health.

The myth isn’t that you’re not trying to achieve health; you are.

The myth is that the diet you’re choosing is not healthy.

But you can choose health instead.

Today’s topic, as simply as possible:

“Diets come and go, but your health is here to stay.”

Rewriting Your Story 📝

You can choose health over dieting.

Let’s begin with that.

You may need multiple dietary changes.

Some will resemble other diets.

However, they are likely to stick only when made with long-term adherence in mind.

A few examples:

  • Any caloric restriction should be temporary, and a plan should be in place for non-restrictive phases - intentional plateaus.

  • Removing an entire group of foods is extremely unlikely to be sustained, nor likely to be healthy.

  • Time-restricted eating is helpful for some, but not all, people.

You can approach these as follows:

  • I will eat a little less most days this month, then practice holding steady next month.

  • I will focus on adding more protein and fiber to ‘crowd out’ my carb-dense intake.

  • I’ll practice intermittent fasting reasonably, but not at the cost of my family meals or social life.

Hopefully, you can see how each of these embraces a forward-thinking viewpoint of how you will be able to sustain this … not ‘how much weight will I lose this week.’

A simple word, phrase, or thought to take with you:

Don’t give away your future happiness for a few pounds this week.
