What's Your Weight Window?

And why Plateaus can be good.

If you’re in a weight loss phase, you will not lose weight every day.

I’ve stated that thousands of times over the years.

Here’s why:

The Big Picture 🖼

Bodyweight is not linear.

It will never stay exactly the same every day, nor will you ever lose or gain weight at a constant rate from day to day.

It ebbs and flows.

In fact, even though we tend to think of it primarily as a daily, 24-hour function, that’s not wholly accurate.

Yes, for sure, what you eat today will affect the scale tomorrow.

But it’s more fluid than that.

There’s no ‘hard 24-hour cause and effect boundary’.

What you ate 2 or 3 days ago could also affect your weight tomorrow.

How active you will be tomorrow affects how much you should eat today.

And of course, life throws us many other curveballs that I’ll talk more about below.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5 👦

Today’s topic, as simply as possible:

“Life moves in waves.”

It’s A Wave Function

How Much Should You Vary? +/—

If you understand the concept that bodyweight is a wave function, then this will make sense too:

Life moves in waves.

We have seasons, holidays, weddings, family events, periods of higher and lower activity, nights out with friends, late nights of work, stressful times, times of sickness, and so on …

Add all of that to the already wavy function of bodyweight and you can see how even the most well-meaning, highly disciplined person couldn’t keep their bodyweight linear infinitely no matter how hard they tried.

There will always be SOME variance.

How much variance?

Most men I work with have a healthy range of +/- 2-4 pounds from day to day.

Most women, a little less, like 1-3 pounds.

But many people freak out when they get on the scale and see +3 pounds!

I’m here to tell you that this is NATURAL.

Especially if you’re eating a balanced diet and taking care of yourself.

Of course, we don’t want to see +3 pounds every day - but that wouldn’t happen if your diet was truly balanced, on average, most days.
