How Coach Matt Got Fat

And, how to get unfat.

Hint: I didn’t get fat overnight.

I’ll show you how to use this to your advantage:

The Boiling Frog 🐸

They say if you put a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump out immediately.

But, if you put it into a pot of cool water and then turn the heat up slowly, it won’t notice the changing temperature … until it’s too late.

It’s not too late for you, nor have I ever boiled a frog alive.

But I did almost boil myself alive by letting my health slip little by little, day by day.

There are many factors and components to your journey.

(My past newsletter, ‘Why Is Weight Loss Hard,’ discusses all those layers more.)

For me, it was a combination of:

  • Growing up on the S.A.D. diet.

  • Losing interest in athletics.

  • Getting into alcohol and marijuana.

  • Poor emotional health.

  • Terrible sleep habits.

During those years, mildly bad habits worsened, becoming more habitual and automatic.

Many people I speak with tell me similar stories.

They’ve gained 20 or 30 pounds.

But they don’t quite know how or why …

… because it happened so slowly over time.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5 👦

Today’s topic, as simply as possible:

“The little things you do every day are big.”

It’s The Same Road 🛣

Too many people miss this:

It wasn’t a few weeks of partying that got you here, which is precisely why a few weeks of a crash diet won’t take you back.

Make Good Health ‘Automatic’ 🤖

Hopefully, by now, you can see that today’s email, like last week’s and many others, is about empowerment.

Yes, getting started with any change is the hardest part.

But once you begin, the daily energy you will need to stay consistently fit goes down exponentially over time … until it feels habitual and automatic.

(It feels automatic now but in a negative way.)

This is why I typically begin new clients with easy wins.

Stacking easy wins in a program's first few days and weeks builds confidence.

I’m not going to ‘prescribe’ any specific action steps today, but here are three common examples of easy initial wins:

  • Move your body for 20 minutes per day.

  • Eat one serving of vegetables per day at a minimum.

  • Drink __ ounces of water per day.

The three assumptions are that those three people are lacking in said areas.

A simple word, phrase, or thought to take with you:

The road of consistency will take you anywhere you want to go.
