Your Beliefs Can Kill You.

(Or change everything.)

As a kid, I believed I could do anything, but something changed.

I started to believe that I was hopeless.

This belief led me to a place of darkness and sickness.

It wasn’t until I started to change my beliefs that my health began to change.

The Big Picture 🖼

Many clients I speak with have disbelief about their ability to change.

They believe things such as:

  • They’re going to ‘fall off the wagon’ again

  • They’re doomed to be stuck in this cycle

  • They can’t possibly look and feel healthy

  • They won’t be happy unless they achieve ___ weight

  • They always make bad choices

This list goes on for a very long time.

I don’t blame you or them for this.

I’d say that most people hold negative or limiting self-beliefs.

Why? Many reasons.

Our parents, friends, culture, teachers, life events, marketing, social media, and many other powerful forces can act against us in this department.

Some intentionally, others unintentionally.

But ultimately, it’s up to YOU to break the cycle.

How?

We’ll discuss below.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5 👦

Today’s topic, as simply as possible:

“Whatever you believe about yourself is true.”

My ‘Vitality Score’ 📈

A while back in my healing journey, I created this:

A subjective rating of my Vitality over time.

It’s a ranking of how I was feeling in 4 key areas of life over time.

The blue line for ‘Vitality’ represents the average of the other 4.

How To Change Beliefs 🧠

First, there are many possible ways to do this.

There are many great books, videos, lectures, coaches, courses, meditations, programs, therapists, neuroscientists, psychologists, psychiatrists, unconventional healers, and more.

I’ve tried many of those.

In fact, at the low point in my journey, I needed professional help, including medication and therapy, to get me started in the right direction.

But here are some things you can do if you do not need professional therapy and are simply struggling with making a change to your health & routines:

A Daily Manifestation

This can help you ‘fake it until you make it.’ If you write down a positive set of beliefs about who you are and what you will achieve and re-read them to yourself every day (perhaps more than once), you will begin to act and feel in that direction.

An Awareness Practice

Meditation, journaling, CBT, or similar things can help interrupt the pattern of getting fixated on negative beliefs.

Focus On The Process

Not the outcome. When you choose the correct set of skills to focus on, and every day, to the best degree that you can, you take action per those skills, your beliefs will begin to change - and results will also.

The ‘catch’ is that only focusing on the results early leads to discouragement.

Closing Thoughts

  • This is an active process, not a passive one. It takes effort.

  • I’ve changed my beliefs at least five times - it’s continuous. There is no finish line.

  • The three suggestions above are not the only options.

  • You may need a coach to provide guidance here.

Don’t just believe me and take my word for it.

Believe in the new version of you and see for yourself.

Parting Zen 🧘‍♂️

A simple word, phrase, or thought to take with you:

You have the power to change your beliefs, and your beliefs can change everything.
