How Many New Year's Resolutions Have You Broken?

(And what to do about it.)

You're not alone if you’ve ever broken a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight or get in better shape.

Some surveys indicate that nearly 50% of Americans resolve to lose weight or get in better shape on January 1st, with estimated failure rates from that group as high as 80% or 90%!

The changing of the New Year might be enough to get you started, but if you want to change your body, your mindset needs to change - not just the date.

Today, we will explore the following:

  1. The Big Picture 🖼️

  2. Explain It To Me Like I’m 5 👦

  3. Approach. Don’t Avoid. 🤝

  4. More Onion Layers 🧅

  5. Parting Zen 🧘‍♂️

The Big Picture 🖼️

The very first question I ask every client I work with during their intake call with me is:

“In your own words, why are we on this call today?”

Every answer is unique.

No one resolves to lose weight on January 1 just because it’s January 1.

There is always a deeper reason.

You may not be ready to discuss it much, but it’s there.

I’m sorry to tell you this, but many of the weight-loss products and programs you will see advertised this December are preying on the fact that you are afraid to have this conversation.

It’s much easier to sell you the quick fix because you (supposedly) get to avoid doing the hard work.

Real change begins with developing a strong Why.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5 👦

Today’s topic, as simply as possible:

“Resolutions should come from inside of you and be things you want to do daily.”

Approach. Don’t Avoid. 🤝

One thing is sure: setting Resolutions in terms of ‘avoiding’ things does not work.

Try an ‘approach-based’ mindset instead.

More Onion Layers 🧅

To achieve your fitness goals in 2024, diving deeper into your ‘Why’ and correctly framing your goals are just 2 of several onion layers.

For most people, every layer of the onion is a process of evolution.

Uncovering why you behave in certain ways around food might take a few weeks.

You probably will need to adjust your goals periodically.

These are good things!

The main reasons that 80% or more of New Year’s Resolutions fail are:

  • They are extrinsically based (on the date)

  • They are too restrictive (avoidance-based)

  • They are not enjoyable to adhere to (for life)

  • They do not teach fundamentals (how to keep weight off)

  • They prey on your fears and dreams.

It would be easy for me to create and sell you a crash diet program to lose 10 pounds in one month.

But how would you keep it off?

In 2024, I am on a mission to:

  • Help 300 people transform their bodies for good

  • Burn down this paradigm of traditional Resolutions
